Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Greetings

Always start with “Bonjour”

Greeting before any request (shop, café, bakery) is non-negotiable. Skipping it reads as rude and you'll get colder service.

Tipping

Service is included

“Service compris” is built into the bill. Rounding up or leaving 1–5 € on a nice meal is appreciated but not expected.

Meals

Strict meal hours

Lunch is 12:00–14:00, dinner from 19:30. Kitchens close in between — outside Paris, finding food at 16:00 is hard.

Transport

Validate before boarding

On TER and Intercités trains, stamp your paper ticket at the yellow “composter” pillars before the platform or risk a fine.

Money

Card everywhere, small cash useful

Contactless is universal up to 50 €. Markets, rural bakeries and some taxis still prefer a few euros in cash.

Safety

Watch metro pickpockets

Paris lines 1, 4 and around Châtelet and the Eiffel Tower are hotspots. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
