Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Cycling

Bikes own the road

Don't walk in the red bike lane and look both ways before stepping off a curb. Cyclists have priority over cars at most junctions.

Money

Maestro/PIN, not always Visa

Many supermarkets and small shops only accept Maestro/V Pay/iDEAL. Carry a backup card or some cash.

Etiquette

Direct = polite

Dutch people say what they think without sugar-coating. It's not rude, it's efficient — match the tone and you'll get on fine.

Coffee shops

“Coffee shop” ≠ café

A “coffeeshop” sells cannabis; a “koffiehuis” or “café” sells coffee and drinks. Don't mix them up when asking for directions.

Tipping

Round up

Service is included. Rounding to the next euro or leaving 5–10 % on a nice dinner is plenty.

Water

Tap water is excellent

Free, safe and high quality. Ask for “kraanwater” and you'll save a few euros at every restaurant.

Culinary journey

Taste the traditional and modern flavors of the Netherlands

Dessert

Stroopwafel

Two thin waffles filled with caramel syrup.

Street Food

Haring

Raw herring served with onions and pickles.

Dessert

Snack

Bitterballen
