Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Money

Use Albanian lek (ALL)

Euros accepted at hotels and tour operators, lek everywhere else. ATMs in every town — Raiffeisen and Credins have the best fees.

Gestures

Nodding sometimes means no

Like Bulgaria, older Albanians may shake their head for yes and nod for no. Confirm verbally — “po” = yes, “jo” = no.

Tipping

10 % at restaurants

Round up everywhere else. Cash tips preferred.

Transport

Furgons over buses

Shared minibuses (furgons) leave when full from informal stops. Faster than buses; ask locals for the meeting point.

Driving

Roads are improving — slowly

Coastal SH8 is fine; mountain roads to Theth or Valbonë require a 4×4 and nerves. Drive in daylight only.

Hospitality

“Besa” is real

Albanians take hospitality seriously — you'll be offered coffee, raki or food everywhere. Accepting (even one sip) is the polite move.
