Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Meals

Late, long dinners

Greeks eat from 21:00 onwards. Tavernas don't rush you — order in waves and expect the meal to last 2+ hours.

Tipping

Round up or 10 %

Leave small change at tavernas; 10 % at nicer restaurants. No tipping at quick souvlaki or bakery counters.

Ferries

Book island ferries early

Summer routes (Santorini, Mykonos, Crete) sell out. Book on ferryhopper or directly with Blue Star/Seajets and arrive 45 min early.

Etiquette

Modest dress at monasteries

Shoulders and knees covered — most sites lend wrap skirts at the entrance. Meteora and Mount Athos are stricter than island chapels.

Plumbing

Don't flush toilet paper

Greek pipes are narrow. Use the bin next to the toilet — even in modern hotels. Signs in the bathroom will remind you.

Cash

Carry small euros

Tavernas on the islands and rural petrol stations may be cash-only. ATMs are widespread but charge fees on small withdrawals.
