Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Coffee

Order “um café”

That means an espresso — the default Portuguese coffee. “Meia de leite” is half coffee, half milk. Filter coffee is rare.

Tipping

Small tips welcome

5–10 % at restaurants is generous, rounding up is fine. The “couvert” bread/olives is optional — refuse it if you don't want to pay.

Transport

Get a Viva Viagem card

Reusable transport card for Lisbon's metro, buses, trams and ferries — much cheaper than buying single tickets.

Etiquette

Don't compare to Spain

Portuguese and Spanish are different languages and cultures. Reply in English rather than Spanish if you don't speak Portuguese.

Beach

Watch the Atlantic

Currents on the west coast are strong. Always swim in lifeguard zones marked with green or yellow flags; red means stay out.

Safety

Tram 28 pickpockets

Lisbon's iconic Tram 28 and crowded Alfama lookouts are pickpocket hotspots. Keep valuables in a zipped front pocket.
