Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Money

Use leu (RON), not euros

Most places refuse euros or give terrible rates. Withdraw from bank ATMs (BCR, BRD, Transilvania) — avoid Euronet.

Tipping

10 % in cash

Hand the tip directly — many card terminals don't allow tipping. Round up taxis and bar tabs.

Transport

Bolt over taxis

Bolt is everywhere in Bucharest, Cluj and Brașov — cheap, reliable and the price is fixed. Street taxis sometimes overcharge tourists.

Etiquette

Cover up at monasteries

Painted monasteries in Bucovina and Transylvania require modest dress. Wrap skirts are usually provided.

Driving

Mountain roads take time

Transfăgărășan and Transalpina are open roughly June–October. Average 30–40 km/h — plan a full day, not a quick crossing.

Safety

Stray dogs

Less common than a decade ago but still around. Don't approach, don't feed; cross the street if a pack appears.

Culinary journey

Discover Romania’s hearty traditional dishes

Dessert

Papanași
