Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Money

Use Serbian dinar (RSD)

Euros sometimes accepted in Belgrade hotels, but you'll lose 5–10 % on the rate. Withdraw RSD from bank ATMs.

Tipping

10 % in cash

Restaurants and taxis. Most card terminals don't accept tips — keep small banknotes for service.

Coffee

Slow Turkish coffee

Order a “domaća kafa” — served unfiltered with grounds at the bottom. Sip slowly, never to the last drop.

Toasts

Look people in the eye

Clink rakija glasses with eye contact and say “Živeli!”. Avoiding eyes during the toast is considered bad luck.

Transport

Buses, not trains

Inter-city buses are faster and more reliable than Serbian railways. BAS station in Belgrade connects the whole country.

Etiquette

Strong opinions, warm welcome

Serbs are direct, hospitable and proud. Don't bring up Kosovo or 90s politics unless invited — conversation will go somewhere uncomfortable.

Culinary journey

Taste the bold flavors of Serbia

Street Food

Pljeskavica

Large Balkan style burger often stuffed with cheese.

Snack

Burek

Layered pastry filled with meat or cheese.

Main course

Ćevapi

Grilled minced meat sausages commonly served with kajmak, raw onions, and flatbread.

Dessert

Krempita

Custard cream slice dessert popular across the region.
