Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Punctuality

Trains leave on the second

Swiss trains depart exactly on time. If it's a 14:23 departure, be on the platform by 14:22 — doors close 30 seconds before.

Money

It uses CHF, not euros

Most places accept euros but give terrible exchange rates and change in CHF. Use a card or withdraw Swiss francs.

Tipping

Service is included

Rounding up is enough. Locals rarely tip more than 5 % even at fine dining.

Transport

Swiss Travel Pass pays off

Worth it if you're moving cities every 1–2 days. Covers nearly all trains, buses, boats and many museums.

Etiquette

Quiet hours are real

Most cantons forbid noise 22:00–07:00 and all day Sunday — no loud music, no washing machines, no drilling.

Water

Drink from the fountains

Public fountains in cities and on hikes are spring-fed and safe unless marked “kein Trinkwasser”. Carry a refillable bottle.
