Culture & local tips

Travel like you've been before.

Money

Euros since 2023

Croatia uses the euro now — prices in older guidebooks listing kuna are out of date. Card accepted in cities; cash useful on islands.

Tipping

10 % for good service

Round up for casual meals; 10 % at sit-down restaurants. Hand the tip directly — most card terminals can't add it.

Beach

Rocky beaches — bring water shoes

Most of the Adriatic coast is pebble or rock, not sand. Water shoes save your feet and the seabed has sea urchins.

Ferries

Book Jadrolinija early

Summer ferries to Hvar, Brač and Korčula sell out. Catamarans are faster but pedestrians only — cars need the slow ferry.

Transport

Buses beat trains

Croatian rail is slow and limited. Inter-city buses (Arriva, FlixBus) are fast, comfortable and connect every town.

Dress

Cover up in town

Wearing swimwear off the beach is fined in Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar (up to 150 €). T-shirt and shorts when you leave the sand.
